Band and Orchestra Festival is an opportunity for ensembles from member schools to perform a program of three pieces for adjudication, one of which must be from MSBOA's required list. District-level festivals are held at the end of February through the beginning of March. Each group is evaluated by three performance judges and one sight-reading judge.
Scoring
Ensembles are rated on a scale from 1 to 5 with 1 being the highest rating possible. The overall score is computed using a formula which combines the ratings of each judge. Ensembles that earn an overall 1 rating (or "Superior") are qualified for State Band & Orchestra Festival which is held in late April or early May. The basic structure of State Band & Orchestra Festival is the same as District, but the ensembles are held to a higher standard. Participating ensembles that earn a rating of 1 or 2 at District or State Festivals receive a certificate and are eligible to purchase plaques for display at their school and medals for each student.
Be Our Guest
Walled Lake Northern is hosting District IV MSBOA Festival on March 15 & 16. This is one of our most important performances and we hope you will plan to share the evening with us! Here is what you can expect:
Concert Band:
Report time to WLN in full uniform will be: 4:15 to their coat room. We will move to our warm up area at 5:05pm and our performance begins at 5:35pm. We will perform our 3 required pieces on stage and then move into the band room for sight reading. Please follow us from the auditorium into the band room to watch this process. Following the sight reading portion of festival students will be dismissed back to their coat room where they may take their cases and coats and wait in the commons together for the rating. Once you drop off your musician you may head into the auditorium to hear other groups or visit our concession stand for a pre-concert snack. You will want to be in the auditorium a few minutes before we perform.
