Marching Band Away Camp--Are you ready?

posted Aug 2, 2014, 5:43 AM by S Lee

Packing List

The packing list is included in the Band Camp Regulations packet which can be found on the website. Students should remember to pack light. The bedroll should include a fitted twin sheet, sleeping bag, and pillow in a big garbage bag with label. The garbage bag will protect the bedroll from dirt during transportation.

Monday Check-In Schedule

Do you know what time to report to school on Monday? If not, check out the Monday Schedule posted on our website. We start with students appearing at 7:00 a.m. Parents, you are required to come into the school with your students. Please don't leave them at the sidewalk and drive away! We need to see you inside.

Monday Parking Lot Request

Please do not park in the driveway/street area between the football stadium and the school during Monday's Check-in. We need this lane open for the buses and loading. You may park in the lot by the tennis courts, closest to F Hall.

Students requiring ANY medication (prescription or over-the-counter) should bring a sufficient supply for the week. All medication should be in its original container and labeled with the student’s name, and should be secured in a labeled zip-lock bag, and turned in at check-in. The medication(s) will be given to the Medical Officer, along with the Health and Registrations forms.

Dust, ragweed and pollen abound at camp. Students who have asthma, or allergies or hay fever are advised to bring adequate supplies of their medication(s), even if they are not taking medication regularly.ALL MEDICATION (including Aspirin, Tylenol, and Ibuprofen) MUST BE ISSUED BY THE CAMP MEDICAL OFFICER. The only exception is for students requiring inhalers for the relief of asthma, who should carry their inhaler at all times.

An additional inhaler should be provided and stored by the health officer.

Meds and Diet Restrictions

Understand that Away Camp is not a time to change a med schedule or to go off medications completely. Also, it is not a good time to change your diet. Please stay on schedule and continue to eat a normal diet (for you).

Food Bins for Snacks

Students are limited to a small shoe-box size container for their personal snacks. The plastic bin should be no larger than 16" x 11" x 7" and should have a closing lid. For transport it is best to tape the bin shut and label it with the student's name.

Liquid Restrictions

Students are prohibited from bringing any bottles that have twist tops (for example, pop bottles are a NO.) They should pack their water bottle for the field, but the bottle must be empty for transport. If the student is going to bring a beverage, it should come in the form of cans or boxes. If it can be opened and closed repeatedly, it is prohibited (except for their water bottle). Do not bring individual bottles of water, soda, or any other liquid.

No Coolers

Coolers are not permitted at camp this year.

Your student will need towels for bathing and swimming (if they choose to swim). These can be packed in the bedroll if luggage space is at a premium.

Electrical Outlets

Some cabins sleep 20 - 30 students. There are only 2 outlets in each cabin. Please ask your student to limit their electronics. We will not be able to accommodate everyone's items.

Rain Gear

Make sure your student is prepared for all types of weather. We will march in the rain. Pack a rain coat or rain gear. Also, bring two pair of shoes for marching and lots of socks. Wet, damp kids are not happy campers.

Adult Volunteers

We're told that there will be day-campers on site during the week and they will be wandering areas of the camp, with the potential for them popping out of shrubbery and meandering into the road. With that in mind, please keep your vehicle's speed at 5 mph max when on camp grounds at all times.

Also, please stay on the established roadways in camp, as the grounds can be very soft and if you try to go 'off road', you may end up needing to be towed.

When arriving at Ohiyesa during the day, you will need to check in at the main office. If arriving before 8:00 a.m. or after 4:30 p.m., check in information will be found in the dining hall.

Please park in the lot that's nearest the marching field, not the lot across from the office. A camp map can be found here:
